All of StarClan sat around Fourtrees, conversing quietly when Spottedleaf sprang to her paws. The ThunderClan medicine cat was singing, her voice flowing across the wind.
“You’ve all learned
I’ve only got eyes for my herbs
When my Clan mates are in need.
But I've got a confession
My own secret obsession
And I’m confusing yarrow and poppy seeds.”
The ThunderClan cats of StarClan gathered around their medicine cat, singing.
“Everybody gather 'round”
Spottedleaf nodded, “Well, you know, my brother turned out to be a murderer, but… I still love Fireheart.”
The clan cats looked shocked. “What?”
Spottedleaf let out a shrill giggle. “But he’s so cute! His fur, his eyes… even his crazy kittypetness!”
The ThunderClan cats looked shocked, “Not another sound”
Spottedleaf nodded, “Someday I’d like to have his kits!”
Cats from all clans looked flabbergasted as the ThunderClan cats sang over Spottedleaf’s swooning.
“No, no, no, nooooooooooo
No, no, no
Stick to the stuff you know
Now, don’cha know
To keep to the code
Don't mess with the flow, no no
Stick to the status quo”
Towards the WindClan section, Windstar looked up;
“Look at me
And what do you see
Loyalty beyond compare
But inside I am stirring
Something strange is occurring
It's a secret I need to share”
Her Clan mates eagerly replied;
”Open up, dig way down deep”
Windstar held up a fish.
“I like to eat fish! I love their taste, their scent, everything!”
Gorsestar shook his head at his mate; “That’s gotta be against the code somewhere…”
The other WindClan cats shook their head worriedly. “Not another peep”
Windstar bit into a fish.
“It’s just different prey! Sometimes I think it tastes better than rabbits…”
The WindClan cats looked horrified.
“No, no, no, nooooooooooo
No, no, no
Stick to the stuff you know
It is better by far
To eat minnows and carp
Don't mess with the flow, no no
Stick to the status quo”
Shadowstar rose to her paws.
“Listen well
I'm ready to tell
Because I cannot live this lie
Cats, there's no explanation
For this oddly strange sensation
But I'm ready to let it fly”
ShadowClan cats gazed admiringly at their founder.
“Speak your mind and you'll be heard”
Shadowstar dipped her head.
“All right, if WindClan are eating fish, then I want to come clean. I’d like to be a kittypet!”
ThunderClan cats exchanged surprised mews.
“Awesome!”
Brokenstar frowned.
“Are you outta your fur??”
Raggedstar smiled.
“Creepy?! COOOL!!!”
Shadowstar glanced at Brokenstar.
“No, dude, it means, like… never hungry! Warmth!”
The ShadowClan cats shook their heads as one.
“Not another word”
A ShadowClan kit looked up.
“Does that mean we can’t live as warriors?”
Shadowstar nodded vigorously.
“No battles too!”
ShadowClan warriors rose, padding around Shadowstar in a circle.
“No, no, no, nooooooooooo
No, no, no
Stick to the stuff you know
Now you’ve gotta be rude
So get yourself a ‘tude
Don't mess with the flow, no no
Stick to the status quoooooooo”
All the cats joined in, encouraged at the clans' protests.
“No, no, no
stick to the stuff you know
It is better by far
To keep things as they are
Don't mess with the flow, no no
Stick to the status quo”
Bluestar padded towards the center of the clearing, Oakheart at her side.
“This is not what I want.
This is not what planned.
And I just gotta say, I do not understand.
Something is really—”
Oakheart nodded, “Something's not right”
Bluestar faced the clans, “Really wrong”
The two forbidden lovers sang, gazing out at the other cats.
“And we gotta get things
Back where they belong
We can do it!”
Shadowstar raised her head. “Sweet as birds!”
The ShadowClan cats turned from their founder.
“Stick with what you know”
The clan cats nodded.
“We can do it”
Windstar frowned, pressing a fish to a rabbit.
“Stick together!”
WindClan cats exchanged worried glances.
“She has got to go”
ThunderClan cats nodded, rising.
“We can do it”
Spottedleaf’s shrill mew rang out.
“Go Fireheart!”
The ThunderClan cats hushed Spottedleaf.
“Keep your voice down low”
All together, the Clans sang;
“Not another peep
No, not another word
No, not another sound
No”
Bluestar padded to the center of the mass of cats,
“Everyone shut up!!!”
Stonefur and Mosskit padded into the clearing. Mosskit looked at her older brother;
“Why is everybody looking at us?”
Stonefur shook his head.
“Not me! You!”
Mosskit’s mew rose to a wail.
“Because of Silverstream? I can’t have people blaming at me, I really can’t.”
The clan cats ignored them, shooting frightened glances around the clearing.
“Noooooooooooooo, no, no, no
Sick to the stuff you know
Now, don’cha know
To stick to the code
Don't mess with the flow, oh no
Stick to the status quooooooooooooo
No, no, no
Stick to the stuff you know
It is better by far
To eat minnows and carp
Don’t mess with the flow, no no
Stick to the status
stick to the status
Stick to the status quo”
Bluestar, Stonefur, Mosskit and Oakheart met at the center of the clearing, Bluestar and Oakheart hurriedly explaining things to their children. Spottedleaf padded towards Riverstar’s Reborn Hut, where she asked to be reborn as a young ThunderClan cat. Windstar pawed at a “rabbish,” her combination of a fish and rabbit, pushing it towards Gorsestar. Shadowstar sat in the middle of a circle of a few cats, trying to pick a suitable collar color that blended with her fur. Others milled around, looking worried. Once Spottedleaf had left, Riverstar was padding to each of his warriors, congratulating them for not being the complete mouse-brains the other clan cats were.
“You’ve all learned
