Disclamer: I don't own Hp or anything else. If I did then Dumbledore would be alive and he'd be married to Mina.
My submission for challenge #98 on the ADMM boards.
*Edit: This is now a three-part story - this is part one (duh!).
Turn Around, Mina
Harry left the room, leaving the office, much faster than he had come. As he crossed the room, Minerva stayed frozen, her hand gripping the thick, heavy parchment envelope. Hands shaking, she slit the back of the envelope open and pulled out two pages for yellowed parachment; and began to read.
Dear Minerva,
If you are reading this now then I am so very sorry. I wish that we could have been together much longer. But, I ask you - please - do not blame Severus. My death is none of his, or Voldemort's, fault.
Over the summer, I went in search for a powerful ring. This ring belonged to Voldemort's uncle Morfin. The ring carried a powerful curse, the very same one that caused my hand to wither. It would soon, if not right away, kill me. When returning, I went to see Severus. He was able to slow the curse. But not for long, not even a year.
So knowing this, I asked Severus a favor. There are three Hallows; the Resurection stone, the Elder Wand, and Harry's invisiblity cloak. I had the Elder Wand after defeating Grindlewald, but the Stone was still unaccoutned for.
But the Elder Wand is something Voldemort wants, but it will not work for him. If deaths are planned or the person dies of natual causes, then the wand will lose it's power to kill. So even if Voldemort kills Severus, then the wand will not work because my death was planned between Severus and I.
Again, I am sorry; for everything. But mostly for the fact that I couldn't tell you a thing. Don't get me wrong, if I could have told you, I would. But the risk was too great at the time.
Trust me, I love you, Mina. But please, if you have any questions on why, I will be there, always. Turn around, Mina, and please look at me. First, I want to know that you will be a wonderful Headmistress and please, don't ever forget that. You are Minerva Athena Kathrine Rosemarie McGonagall Dumbledore and don't you ever forget that I love you.
Always,
Albus
Hands shaking, Minerva tucked the letter into the envelope. Turning to face Albus, she felt tears spring to her eyes. He smiled, "Don't cry Mina. Please," his voice was calming, and quiet. He went on, "Mina, I'm sorry," Albus watched her closely as she placed the letter in the top drawer on the desk.
"How could you?" Minerva's eyes blazed; her tears seemed so far away now. She balled her hands into fists, "Why couldn't you tell me? I trusted you to tell me everything! You told me that you loved me. Or maybe I just dreamed that. Maybe I just imagined that you asked me to marry you."
"Maybe," Minerva wiped a tear from her cheek, "I was a fool when I fell in love with you. And that I could believe that you loved me back." Albus shook his head, "No, Tabby, I can't believe you. I loved you, and I still do now."
Minerva looked up, facing Albus, "You mean it? Then why didn't you tell me?" Albus shook his head, "I don't know Tabby. But I hope that you will tell Harry what I said to you - in time." Minerva nodded slowly, "I will Albus." She turned towards the door, setting a hand on it, "I must go to the Hospital Wing and check on the students. Good night," she opened the door.
"And Albus -" Minerva smiled, "- I love you too."
AN: Okay ... well, I typed this up on a friend's computer right into the message box. So I couldn't spell check. But yea ... that's it.
