Lorelai walked into Luke's unsure of what to expect. She sat down at the table nearest to the door and waited. Luke looked up, noticed her, then walked over.
"Hey," he said.
"Hi," Lorelai said quietly.
"Missed ya at breakfast today," he commented.
"Yeah," she murmered. "Can I have some coffee, for here, and....I didn't know you made paninis!"
Luke nodded. "Yeah, well...so, you're eating here? For lunch?" Her coffee had been to go for a very long time now.
"Mmhmm..so yeah, I'll have one of those paninis. I don't really care what kind, surprise me." Luke nodded and walked away. Lorelai sighed. He didn't have to know that she had begun to like him. She had been all about Christopher until the previous night. She had been walking past the diner and Luke had been coming out, to throw away the trash. They talked. She felt so completely at ease, and she really did like Luke. He always did nice things, he was funny, just the right amount of surly, and he had quirks, just like her. She had suddenly felt the urge to kiss him, so she quickly made an excuse to leave. She thought maybe she liked him, or maybe she was falling in love.
"Oh, Luke?" she called after him. He turned around. "Never mind."
For the next couple of days, Lorelai would eat at Luke's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She overdosed on coffee. She saw him whenever she could. She and Rory were walking down the street when she saw him in Doose's Market.
"Hey, I forgot, I need to pick up some stuff," she said, heading back toward the store.
"Like what?" Rory said, following her. Lorelai made a quick list in her head.
"Tissues, chocolate bars, apples--"
"Apples?? Are you pregnant!!?!?" Rory freaked. Her mom only craved apples when she was pregnant.
"No..." Lorelai said, realizing her error. "Just menstrual...hormonal...gah." She fixed her with a withering stare, then gave up on her daughter and walked in the store. She casually headed towards Luke's aisle.
"Mom, that aisle doesn't have any of the things you need," Rory said, gesturing towards the right aisle. She then picked up a small basket for their items.
"Oh, didn't I mention that I also need..." she looked at what was in the aisle, "...heavy duty duct tape?"
Rory looked at her mom skeptically, then followed her into the aisle. Lorelai nonchalantly bumped into Luke backwards.
"Oh, hey, Luke!" Lorelai said, smiling.
"Hi," he said, grabbing a drill.
"So, what duct tape brand would you say is best?"
Luke thought for a moment, then grabbed one of the top shelf and handed it to Lorelai, who handed it to Rory without glancing at it.
"Don't you wanna look at it?" Luke inquired, wondering why she needed heavy duty duct tape anyway.
"Nah, I trust your judgement." She thought for a moment. "So, um, how would one go about making a duct tape hat?" Luke looked at her, giving her his "sometimes-I-don't-know-what-goes-on-in-your-head" looks. "No? Okay. Well, see you later," she said, smiling.
"Yeah, see ya."
After Lorelai had picked up the rest of the things she said she needed but didn't really need, smiling at Luke when she passed him, and checked out, they left and Rory stopped her outside.
"Mom? Do you have something you would like to tell me?"
"What...?"
"What? What--what was that?"
"What was what?"
"What do you mean what was what, that!"
"Which that? What is going on here???" Lorelai exclaimed, then continued down the street.
"Mom," Rory said sternly. "I saw those looks you were giving him. Do you have a thing for Luke?!?"
Lorelai stopped dead in her tracks, coincidentally, right outside of Luke's diner. She stopped so fast that Rory, who had been rushing after her, overshot her. "I...well...the thing is...he is very nice...and he's very good looking...but..." Rory urged her on with a look. "Okay, okay, I think I've fallen for Luke. Luke the diner guy. Luke who everyone says is 'pining' for me but now that I can't get enough of him doesn't seem to care." Rory's jaw dropped. "God, fine, you got me to say it. I haven't told anybody, okay? So don't go saying anything." They stood there for a few more moments.
"Oh my God...Luke!" Rory exclaimed in a hushed tone.
"I know," Lorelai said, blushing.
"No, I mean..." Rory jabbed her finger in the direction she was facing. "Luke." Lorelai processed for a moment, then hung her head, covering her face with her hand. Luke was standing behind her, and he had heard most of what she had just said.
"Mrrrrrh," she murmured as Rory put her arm around her shoulders and herded her away. Luke stood behind them, stunned, for a very, very long time.
The next morning, Lorelai thought about avoiding Luke's, but she couldn't cook for her life and she really wanted bacon. Plus, then he would know that something was up. It would make it weird. So, she and Rory made the short walk to Luke's and he pointed them to a table, barely glancing up. They sat down and waited. Luke came over to take their order.
"What can I getcha?" he asked, hoding his pad ready.
"Coffee and blueberry pancakes?" Rory said, Luke writing.
"Can I have eggs and bacon?" Luke turned to leave. "Oh, and coffee," Lorelai added.
"I thought it was a given," Luke smiled, turning and walking away. Lorelai blushed at his eye contact.
"Mom," Rory smirked. "You have a little crush!"
"Eehhh..." Lorelai muttered.
"What, you changed your mind already?"
"No...big crush. Very big."
"What are you gonna do?" Rory asked excitedly. Lorelai shrugged. The rest of the meal was spent edging on other subjects. After Rory left to catch the bus to Hartford for school, Lorelai sat alone for a while. People were clearing out from the breakfast round. Brunch was always pretty slow, then there was the lunch rush. Right now was a calm, in-between period. Luke came over and sat across from her.
"Don't you have to be at work or something?" he asked.
"Eventually," Lorelai said.
"Hey..." Luke began, then looked down, as if second guessing himself. Lorelai looked up. He looked up and into her eyes. "Do you maybe want to go out to dinner tonight?" he asked as confidently as he could muster.
Lorelai tried not to smile to wide. "Yeah, I'd like that."
"Great, so, uh, I'll pick you up at seven?"
"Seven sounds great." Then, Lorelai smiled, grabbed her bag off the back of her chair, and left the diner, blushing crazily. Luke turned back to the counter and breathed a sigh of relief.
"Oh Luuuuuke...." he heard a voice call from the side of the diner.
"Yes, Patty?" he mumbled without facing her.
"What was that all about, suga?" Babette asked straightforwardly. Luke sighed and turned to face the two women.
"I'd ask you to stay out of it, but I know that's not gonna happen," he commented. They were making puppy dog faces at him.
"Just think," Miss Patty said to Babette, "after so many years of pining for her, he's finally gonna get her!"
"It's a miracle! Luke," Babette said, "did you see the way she was blushin' when you asked her out? Did you see her giggling down the street? We saw it, and she looked supa happy if you ask me. When Maury first asked me out, I don't even think I was that happy, and I really loved the guy. I love him more now, he was a bit of a punk back then, but, you know..."
Luke couldn't help but smile.
"What on earth am I supposed to wear???" Lorelai begged Rory to help her. Rory began to dig through her mom's closet. "I don't want to be too casual is case we go somewhere fancy or even if we don't it will look like I don't care, but if I go too fancy, it will look like I'm trying too hard, but I guess that's not always a bad thing, but it can be a huge turnoff..."
Rory shut her up by shoving a flowing, black, just above knee-length skirt into her arms with a black fitted tee. She held up a finger to signal her mom to wait a moment. Then she pushed the finger to her mouth to signal quiet. She left the room and returned a moment later with a blue sweater. Lorelai gasped.
"You're letting me wear your prized blue sweater that you won't even let anyone touch!?!?" she exclaimed. Rory pressed her finger to her lips again, but smiled. "Did you lose your voice?" Rory nodded. "How?" Rory shrugged. Then she made the motion of yelling and pointed to her mom's Eiffel Tower postcard she had gotten in France as a little girl. "Fight with Paris?" Rory nodded, then gestured to the bracelet on her wrist. "Fight with Dean too?"Rory nodded again, sad. Then she pointed to her mom. "Fight with me??" Rory shook her head no. She rolled her fingers. She made the motion of walking to say where her mom was going, but Lorelai didn't get it. She sighed and pretended to drink coffee. "Fight with coffee? Oh, Luke? JESS! Fight with Jess?" Rory shook her head and pointed to her bracelet again. "Fight with Dean about Jess...oh, honey, I'm sorry!" Rory sighed, nodded, and walked back to her mom's closet. She pulled out a pair of baby blue heels that matched the sweater perfectly.
"Perfect," Lorelai grinned.
"Hey," he said.
"Hi," Lorelai said quietly.
"Missed ya at breakfast today," he commented.
"Yeah," she murmered. "Can I have some coffee, for here, and....I didn't know you made paninis!"
