If You Were Not A Bride...

Inspired by the following quote from “Ben-Hur” – ‘If you were not a bride I would kiss you goodbye.’ ‘If I were not a bride, there would be no goodbyes to be said.’

He couldn’t believe that she was getting married – and to him, of all people! He loved her, knew that she loved him, but he couldn’t marry her. They had had one night together, and it was the best night of both of their lives. But after that night, they realised that they could never be together again. It had been a mistake, but the best mistake that they had ever made.
But now she was marrying him.
“Do you love ’im?” he asked her. They were in the vestibule of the church – he was to give her away.
She turned away from him, tears in her eyes. “I do,” she said.
“You and I both know that that’s a lie,” he told her softly.
She turned back to him. “What would you have me say? No, I don’t love him; I will never love anyone but you. But I can’t dwell in the past forever – I have to move on.”
The wedding march began to play, and he offered her his arm, which she took.
“If you were not a bride I would kiss you goodbye,” he whispered softly.
“If I were not a bride, there would be no goodbyes to be said,” she replied.
He caressed her cheek softly and she looked up at him for the last time, tears in her eyes. He sighed sadly and walked her down the aisle to her new life – one that did not include him.
