Credits go to Sonya Sones and Simon Pulse Publishing. I do not own these characters. This fan fiction DOES NOT pertain to the actual events of the book, "What My Mother Doesn't Know."
Prologue: Sophie is in 9th grade. Lou is old news. She used to be with Dylan, but they have recently suffered a breakup. At the Halloween Dance, Sophie's mom made her but a hideous flower dress, so she secretly bought a cute black one. She danced with a masked man who's forearms she fell in love with. Occasionally she has fantasies about kissing this nerd, Murphy. People use the name Murphy as an insult: "You are such a Murphy!" Rachel and Grace are her best friends.
Valentine's Day
It's tomorrow.
Dylan is pretty much
out of the picture.
Don't get me started on Lou.
My masked man would be
a pretty cool date
to the Valentine's Day dance.
If I knew who he was.
Everyone loves Valentine's Day.
Mushy cards,
flowers,
chocolates,
hearts.
But I have no one to share it with.
So what's the point?
I Wonder If Murphy Is Going
Not that I'd ask him
or anything
as extreme as that.
I just wondered
if he was going.
Here It Is
I did NOT want to go
to school today.
I assumed
boyfriends and girlfriends
would be all over the place.
I was right.
The little hearts
coming off of their
entwined figures
are totally mocking me.
Dance, Dance
Rachel is here
with Danny.
Grace is here
with Henry.
I'm here
with this plastic cup
full of blood red fruit punch
and my hideous
rosebush
dress.
So right now
probably wouldn't be
the best time
to spill your punch on me.
Zak, you are
an idiot.
It's Not That I Didn't Get Asked
Because I totally did.
Zak asked me...
3 times.
A few tenth graders
asked me on dares.
This really short kid
who I heard just moved here
from Alabama
asked me.
I almost said yes,
just because his accent was so cute.
But
I didn't.
I said no to all of them.
As I Examine The Dancers
I notice someone
standing against a wall
on the other side of the gym.
He's wearing a button down
with khakis.
His sleeves are rolled up,
revealing amazingly nice
forearms.
I look away
in shock
before I can look at his face.
Those were the arms that
held me at the Halloween Dance.
Suddenly...
One of those amazingly nice forearms
is blocking my view of the floor.
It looks like someone
is holding it out
for me to take hold of.
"Would you like to dance?"
a voice says.
A nice voice.
I look up.
It's Murphy.
I Gasp
Murphy???
He's my masked man?
No way.
He's the weirdest guy in school!
Well, not that I know him that well.
Still!
"You-did you dance with me
on Halloween?" I ask nervously.
Murphy smiles and nods.
I like his smile.
His arm
is still held out to me.
I take his hand and he leads me
onto the dance floor.
And it was Halloween
all over again.
I Don't Care Who's Watching
Because this feels so right.
And it feels like we've been
doing this forever.
And at the same time--
it feels so new.
We Dance Till The End Of The Night
But we hardly notice when
nearly everyone is gone.
We were too busy
staring into each other's eyes
and talking about
just about everything
that we could have gone on
forever.
But Then Murphy Says
"I gotta go.
My mom's probably waiting."
I nod,
and he pulls away from me
reluctantly,
and smiles.
"Bye, Sophie.
It was fun."
Then he turns
and begins to walk
away.
But I Won't Let Him
I run after him
and grab his wonderful
forearm.
"Wait, Murphy..."
"It's actually Robin," he says quietly.
I remembered suddenly
that Murphy was his last name,
and that people used it as an
insult.
"Right..." I say,
embarrassed.
"Robin.
I, um...
can I call you sometime?"
He smiled
that wonderful smile of his,
and pulled a pen out of his pocket.
He takes my hand,
and writes down
a series of digits,
that may just
change my life.
I Just Couldn't Help It
I wrapped my arms around him
and hugged him.
And then we both
looked at each other
and leaned a little bit forward
and our lips met
at exactly the right time
in exactly the right place
and it was absolutely
perfect.
Happy Valentine's Day
to me.
And to Robin.
